Scotland's former First Minister Alex Salmond arrested

Former Scottish first minister Alex Salmond has been arrested and charged by police.

The 64-year-old politician was arrested by Police Scotland but the force did not give any details of the charge.

He will appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court this afternoon.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that a 64-year-old man has been arrested and charged, and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

It is understood he was arrested by police last night.

Mr Salmond, from Linlithgow, West Lothian, was the Scottish first minister from 2007 to 2014 but quit after the Scottish independence referendum.

He lost his seat in the House of Commons in 2017.

He had been under investigation by Police Scotland following claims of sexual harassment against him.

He strenuously denies the allegations.

Earlier this month, the former Scottish National Party leader won a procedural case against the Scottish Government over its investigation into harassment allegations brought by two women.

The Scottish Government’s handling of the allegations against Mr Salmond was ruled unlawful by Scotland’s highest civil court.

Mr Salmond led the SNP for two decades, building the separatist party into a major political force and taking Scotland to the brink of independence from the UK before stepping down after the referendum defeat.
