Scotland's first 'Pay What You Want' bookshop opens to cut down on books going to landfill

Scotland's first 'Pay What You Want' bookshop has opened today in response to the number of books going to landfill everyday.

Based on Ferry Road in Leith, Edinburgh the new shop where customers can pay whatever they feel is appropriate aims to open every weekend.

However, today's opening event has been ticketed to help control the numbers of people entering and leaving the shop.

The bookshop is run by Miixer CIC which is the legacy project from Scotland's first zero-waste town, Dunbar.

Director Susan Guy said: "It has been the most uplifting experience and the interest and support has been overwhelming.

"The difference this is going to make is community benefit and massive CO2 emission savings, keeping good books from going to landfill at approximately two tonnes per week."

First established in 2017, Miixer work with Edinburgh and East Lothian Council where they have Reuse Sheds at Recycling Centres.

They are also set to have another based in Seafield, West Lothian from August.

In 2019, the project diverted over 1,000 tonnes of reusable materials away from landfill, saving considerable amounts of CO2 emissions.

Currently on a trial basis, the bookshop will only be able to continue operating with the help of donations and volunteers.

A Miixer spokesperson said: "If we are to open after this weekend we need your support with volunteering and donations.

"'Pay What You Want Pricing' is the most democratic form of retail. But it is risky and we are unlikely to cover our costs.

"We’d love this to work but that’s down to you and your generosity."
