Scotland's first openly-gay Kirk minister reveals hate message nailed to his church

The first openly-gay Kirk minister in Scotland has told how a hate message was nailed to his church on the eve of his induction.

Speaking after 10 years in his post, the Rev Scott Rennie said it read: “God’s house has been turned into a den of iniquity.”

Rennie, 47, caused a rift in the Church of Scotland when he was appointed to Queen’s Cross Church, Aberdeen in 2009.

But the Kirk’s General Assembly voted by 326 to 267 to uphold his new posting.

His confirmation came despite an online petition signed by more than 12,000 people, including 272 Kirk ministers, in opposition.

Rennie said: “Every day I would get horrible letters, including diatribes threatening hell and damnation.”
