Scotland's Euro 2020 state of play and the multiple routes of qualification that lie ahead for Steve Clarke

A well-earned point at Wembley has kept our dreams of getting out of the group alive, but how can Scotland reach the last 16?

The battling point against England showed exactly what Steve Clarke' s men are capable of heading into the final group clash at Hampden.

The format of the tournament opens up plenty of questions heading into the crucial final day showdown with Croatia, but how can we still make it to the knockout stage for the first time ever?

We can still finish among the top two ahead of Gareth Southgate's side, while you need to pull out your fixtures lists and calculators to try and predict a third-placed Euro 2020 qualification.

Well, Record Sport has put the group in focus with our lads on the brink of creating history in Glasgow next week.

How can Scotland finish second?

It may seem unlikely, but so was getting a point at Wembley.

A victory over Croatia could still see Scotland finish second if England lose and they better the Three Lions’ goal difference.

There would need to be a Czech Republic win and a three goal swing to leapfrog the Auld Enemy.

The Czechs are in good form but a win at Wembley could be a big ask, and a shared point would be enough to see both sides in the last 16.

How do you qualify in third place?

We know that the top two teams from all six groups will progress through to the knockout stages once each side in every group has played each other.

Promisingly, once that is decided the four-best third-placed teams will also go through.

For that we first need to look at points, then who has the the superior goal difference. If they cannot be separated on that front, then it comes down to the higher number of goals scored.

The next on the list is which team has the highest number of wins, however if that doesn't produce a winner then it comes down to the team with the best disciplinary record through the tournament.

If at that point we can't be split with another nation then it will come down to the position they hold in the overall European Qualifiers rankings.

How do Scotland become one of the best third-placed teams?

So, first of all, we have to beat Croatia.

Four points will hopefully be enough but we could have company on that mark after all is said and done.

If you cast your eye over the other groups, there will be plenty of teams aiming for the four point mark in the final fixtures.

In Group B Russia face off against Denmark, and given the Danes' chances are looking slim they will fancy their chances of pushing Belgium for top spot in the group.

A point won't put the Russians ahead of Scotland should we win at Hampden, as they have a poorer goal difference.

Finland, who are also on three points, will face Roberto Martinez's side knowing they could do with a point, but have a goal difference of zero.

In Group B, Austria face off with Ukraine, who are both on three points, and know they need to win to guarantee their place in the last 16 and that third spot may not be good enough to be among the top four.

Slovakia face a mammoth task against Spain - who will still be hoping to top Group E with two matchdays left to play.

Switzerland sit on a point going into the last day but will need to boost their goal difference and win against Turkey to survive having been seen off by Italy 3-0. A draw in that final game with leave them both on two points and most definitely rule out that group as one of the four.

Group F looks to be the most tantalising section with Portugal, France, and Germany all looking for an escape route.

The third place team from the trio must finish higher than Hungary and will be looking to rack up some big scorelines to skew the goal difference in their favour.

No matter what it looks set to be a nerve-shredding close to the group stage.
