Scotland's Euro 2020 play off set to be postponed as FIFA suspends key rule amid coronavirus crisis

Scotland's Euro 2020 play off is set to be cancelled after FIFA recommended all international fixtures over the next two months be postponed.

Steve Clarke 's side are scheduled to face Israel at Hampden on March 26 but the semi-final clash looked highly unlikely to go ahead even before the world governing body's intervention.

FIFA have announced rules which oblige clubs to release players for national team matches will not apply in March and April.

Domestic football in Scotland was suspended indefinitely on Friday amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis, plunging the entire SPFL season into doubt.

Israel has already warned citizens to avoid international travel as the pandemic continues to grip world football.

And the latest FIFA guidance paints a bleak picture for sell-out showdown at the national stadium.

A statement said: “We recommend that all international matches previously scheduled to take place in March and April should now be postponed until such time that they can take place in a safe and secure environment, both for players and for the general public.”
