Scotland's 'Covid hotspot' with highest infection rate in country this week

Coronavirus infection rates in West Dunbartonshire are now among the top 20 highest in the country.

Cases have been continuing to spike in the area for several days - making it the Scotland's current Covid hotspot.

The council area recorded a rate of 744.8 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending between September 14 to 20, according to the latest data from Public Health Scotland.

The infection rate in the region is higher than the national average, which currently sits at 457.8.

West Dunbartonshire is now ranked number one in a table of local areas where infection rates are the highest, with North Lanarkshire and South Ayrshire following close behind.

There are 20 council areas with rates of 400+ of positive cases per 100,000 of the population - the highest infection level possible.

Other locations on the list include East Dunbartonshire, East Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, North Ayrshire, Falkirk, Inverclyde, Fife and Dundee City.

The lowest infection rate is in the Orkney Islands, with 107.1 cases per 100,000 people in the past week.

It comes as A further 4,024 new cases have been reported in Scotland in the last 24 hours – with the disease claiming another 37 lives.

The number of Covid-19 deaths in Scotland has increased for the fourth week in a row, with a total of 10,826 people having now died with the virus, according to the latest data.
