Scotland’s covid heroes remind us of all that’s good about our communities

Scotland’s covid heroes have been recognised by the Queen for all their efforts in supporting people across the country.

It’s great to see national treasures such as Lorraine Kelly and Eve Muirhead thanked for their stellar charity work during these tough times.

But the real heroes of the pandemic are the Scots who have been doing extraordinary things to change lives.

They include Margaret Payne, 90, who receives a British Empire Medal for services to her community in Sutherland.

She scaled the height of the 2398ft Suilven by going up and down her stairs.

In the process, she raised funds for the NHS, the Highland Hospice and the RNLI, with the total now at £434,000.

Then there’s Liz McLean, a Co-op store manager in Brodick, who also gets a BEM for putting her store at the centre of the Isle of Arran’s community response to the crisis, including working round the clock to ensure deliveries were made to hundreds of elderly and vulnerable residents on the island.

It’s stories like these that remind us of all that’s best in our communities.

They’re a reminder of the good people, from all walks of life, who are working selflessly to help us get through this troubled time.
