Scotland's coolest grandad treats himself to ‘boy racer’ car make-over for 90th birthday

A Scots pensioner has treated himself to a ‘boy racer’ car make-over for his 90th birthday treat.

John Murray, 89, from Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, has had his Ford Fiesta transformed with a new red roof and red wing mirrors.

‘The coolest great granda’ was inspired by his daughter, Gail Reid and her souped-up Mini when he asked his son-in-law Jim Reid to do his own motor up.

Jim, 50, who owns Reid Vehicle Sales and Services based near Inverurie, said he ‘couldn’t refuse’ the unusual request and set to work straight away.

He said: “I was really surprised because John is never really interested in cars apart from driving every day to pick up his paper.

“Gail’s Mini Countryman has a bright red roof and red wing mirrors  and he wanted the same done to his wee white Fiesta.

“He will be 90 next month but insisted he would pay for the full thing himself. It was a couple of hundred pounds for the work, but he was adamant.

“How could I refuse? I think it’s proof that regardless of age your inner ‘boy racer’ is never far away.

“In the midst of all this madness it’s moments like these that warm your heart."

A great choice Mr Murray, very smart indeed.

If you see him on the roads of Inverurie, make sure you give him a wee toot and a wave.
