Scotland's Christmas lockdown easing will be temporary, limited and 'different' from England

Christmas lockdown easing will be limited and temporary, Nicola Sturgeon has warned.

She confirmed she's close to making a deal with the other UK nations on a framework for allowing families to meet over the festive period.

However, she told the Scottish Parliament today that some details may vary between countries, depending on their individual circumstances.

Updating MSPs on the progress of Scotland's fight to reduce the coronavirus infection rate, the First Minister said she will take part in a Cobra meeting later today with the the three other nations.

She said: "It is hoped we will agree a common framework - albeit that some details, for example, on the precise definition of households, this might differ to reflect the different circumstances in each nation.

"I know everyone has a desire to see loved ones over the festive period, however there is also a very real and very legitimate anxiety that doing so could put those we love at risk, set back progress as a country and result in unnecessary deaths and suffering."

Ms Sturgeon also pointed out that any risk is made all more concerning, when hope of vaccine is just around the corner.

She added: "This would always be a worry, but it is perhaps especially acute when we also know that we might be within weeks of being able to vaccinate a significant proportion of the population.

"Any easing of restrictions will be temporary, will be limited and will be accompanied by advice on the precautions that we should all take."
