Scotland's biggest school will be finished tomorrow in East Ayrshire

Construction of Scotland’s biggest school in Cumnock is set to finish tomorrow as pupils get ready to move in.

The £68 million  Barony Campus will boast an immersive cinema, auditorium, recording studio and 13 indoor sports courts.

Pupils from Auchinleck and Cumnock Academies will head to class in the state-of-the-art campus on October 26.

The historic high schools have now closed for good as teachers start packing up.

Primary children will start attending the huge super school in November.

Builders Morrison Construction is due hand over the building to East Ayrshire Council tomorrow.

Cumnock Councillor Jim McMahon said: “I m absolutely delighted we are at this stage. It will open up a new world of opportunities for the pupils at the Barony.

“There will also be community benefits with a world class auditorium, cafe and gym facilities.

“I can’t wait until the kids are in. I look forward to visiting.”

The huge education complex will combine five schools and two nurseries - and have its own sports village.

High school teachers will set up their classrooms at the Barony Campus from October 20 to 23 - getting ready to welcome pupils on Monday, 26. Children will receive work on Microsoft Teams while the school is prepared.

Both secondaries will merge to form the Robert Burns Academy.

The campus will also be home to Barshare and Greenmill primaries. They will both be called Lochnorris Primary School. The two nurseries will become the Cherry Trees Early Childhood Centre.  Additional support needs school Hillside will also be based on the site.

There is to be a  total of about 2,300 pupils on the campus with headteacher Peter Gilchrist taking on the huge task of managing it.

Council chief executive Fiona Lees described the campus as a "game changer" and "spectacular" as she shared photos of the campus on social media.
