Scotland's best place to live revealed - is your town on the list?

Edinburgh's Leith has been crowned the best place to live in Scotland.

The Scottish capital's former port district has topped the prestigious country-wide list, according to the The Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide.

Described by judges as a "breath of fresh air", it is noted for its diversity, creative roots and trendy places to eat including Tom Kitchin’s Michelin-starred restaurant.

Judges were also impressed by repurposed industrial buildings, such as a former biscuit factory which has become a gin distillery.

Irvine Welsh, the best-selling author of Trainspotting, who was born in Leith, responded to the award by saying: “Leith is the sexiest place in the world and it’s the home of Hibs, the sexiest club on earth. Of course people want to live there.”

In second was the Highland village of Cromarty, while Dunblane came third.

Dundee, last year’s Scottish winner, is back on the list at fourth place, with the judges praising the city’s beauty, helped by the waterfront and the V&A.

North Berwick in East Lothian, an upmarket seaside destination only half an hour from the capital, also returns to the list.

The Sunday Times’s expert judges travelled thousands of miles around the UK, visiting the locations and talking to locals to compile the list.

To crown the winner, they assessed schools, transport, broadband speed, culture, green spaces and the health of the high street.

The overall winner in the UK will be revealed on Sunday March 22 in The Sunday Times.
