Scotland's best hidden gem fairytale castles you can visit this summer

Though you may have heard of, or even visited, some of Scotland's most incredible castles, it's highly likely that you won't have seen them all.

With an estimated 2,000 castles (though it could be as many as 4,000) dotted around Scotland's rolling hills and picturesque glens, there are always new ones waiting to be discovered.

For many, the perfectly formed and picturesque Dunrobin Castle or the remote and beautiful Eilean Donan are instantly recognisable, but these well-known and striking strongholds aren't the only options when doing a little castle hunting around Scotland.

Here are some of the best hidden gem Scottish castles to check out.
