Scotland records 740 new coronavirus cases over last 24 hours

A total of 740 new cases of Covid have been recorded in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

The latest figures show that 12.3 per cent of the total number of tests carried out came back positive overnight.

The number of deaths, hospital admissions and intensive care patients are not being released over the festive season.

A comprehensive update is expected to be given on December 29 with data for the previous four days.

On Boxing Day, mainland Scotland was plunged into Level 4 lockdown restrictions in the wake of fears over a mutant strain of coronavirus.

Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles are exempt, but they moved to level three on the alert level system.

The measures are set to be in place for three weeks, but the Scottish Government says it will review the restrictions after two.

Under the new rules, Scots must not mix with another household indoors in a private home.

Six people from two households can meet outdoors in a private garden or in a public place such as a park.

Travel into another council area is prohibited.

Restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars must close but they can still operate with takeaway services.

All holiday accommodation is closed to tourism, and leisure and entertainment premises must shut down.

Only essential retail, such as supermarkets, petrol stations and pharmacies, are allowed to remain open.
