Scotland records 15 Covid deaths overnight with 6,756 cases

Scotland has recorded 15 Covid deaths in the last 24 hours, according to official figures.

The latest Scottish Government revealed that 6,756 new coronavirus cases had also been identified overnight.

There are currently 1,093 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 11 being treated in intensive care.

The total number of positive cases since the pandemic started stands at 1,362,296.

To date 4,433,601 people have received their first vaccination with 4,153,359 having a second jab and 3,410,555 have received a third dose or booster.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon announced yesterday that the majority of covid restrictions would be dropped next month.

The First Minister also revealed her cabinet had decided to scrap vaccine passports from this Monday, February 28.

From March 21, the legal requirement to wear face coverings in certain indoor settings and public transport will end, while businesses and service providers will no longer need to retain customer contact details.

Sturgeon said testing will remain a ‘vital’ part of Scotland’s recovery from the covid pandemic.

Meanwhile Dundee University scientists are using super-strong UV light to kill Covid-19 on work surfaces and in the air.

The researchers are now investigating the human safety of the technology that could be a game-changer in the long term fight against the virus.

And they want to hear from healthy individuals who are prone to getting sunburnt to help further their studies that could have a ‘significant impact’ on Covid-19 prevention.

Participants who successfully complete the study will receive payment of £500 in recognition of their time commitment.
