Scotland records 10 Covid deaths overnight as cases rise by 6,711

Scotland has recorded 10 coronavirus deaths overnight as cases rose by 6,711.

The Scottish Government confirmed the death toll since last March – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – now stands at 8,154.

There are currently 653 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus with 60 being treated in intensive care.

To date 4,114,552 people have received their first vaccination with 3,709,328 having a second jab.

It comes as people across Scotland can now download or receive a paper QR code showing their Covid vaccination status.

The plan was announced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Wednesday, with the passports used to gain entry to nightclubs and large events.

The free documents can be downloaded from the NHS website or posted to people requesting them by phone.

The scannable images, or 2D barcodes, are being added to all vaccination records requested from Friday.

Vaccinated children over 12 will only be able to request a copy of their vaccination status by phoning the Covid-19 Status Helpline.
