Scotland records 1,149 new coronavirus cases as country plunged into Boxing Day lockdown

A total of 1,149 coronavirus cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours, the Scottish Government has announced.

The latest figures show that 8.2 per cent of the total number of tests came back positive overnight.

The majority of Scotland has been placed into Level Four (PA)

The number of deaths, hospital admissions and intensive care patients are not being released over the festive season.

A comprehensive update is expected to be given on December 29 with data for the previous four days.

The latest figures bring the total number of people to test positive for the killer virus to 119,184 across Scotland since the start of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Scots have woken up to the first day of stricter restrictions as large swathes of the country have been placed in Level 4.

The move was announced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon last week after she was forced to perform a U-turn on the planned five day rules relaxation over Christmas.

It followed the discovery of a mutant strain of Covid-19 which spreads much faster than the original virus.

Scots are being told to stay at home and only travel if absolutely necessary in a bid to prevent the strain from taking hold.
