Scotland record stunning Australia win as Ewan Ashman steals the show in Murrayfield nerve shredder

A proud Murrayfield saluted Scotland for seeing off Australia in a famous home victory over Australia to equal their best ever run against the Wallabies.

Gregor Townsend's side remain unbeaten in the Autumn Nations Series after beating the Aussies 15-13, with tries from Hamish Watson and debut boy Ewan Ashman.

The Canada-born hooker was introduced minutes in in after an injury to George Turner. Australia were handed an early penalty but James O'Connor's attempt was ghastly, missing the target by some distance.

It was a messy start at Murrayfield and pulses were racing for the right reasons when it looked like the home side had found a hole in the opposing defence, and then for the wrong reasons when it looked like Darcy Graham's pass was picked off. Thankfully, the home side were rescued by the safety net of an advantage.

Captain Stuart Hogg then barrelled down the left and a neat series of passes with Ali Price and Duhan van der Merwe carried it all the way for a lineout — but Finn Russell lost possession at a vital moment.

Moments later they took it to the exact same position and this time got it spot on with Hamish Watson finishing the job on the drive.

Despite the TMO's best efforts, referee Romain Poite was convinced his on-field decision of a try was the correct one and Russell duly added the extras.

It remained scrappy up towards half-time but Australia appeared to hit back when Michael Hooper carried over.

However this time the try was ruled out by TMO with a penalty and yellow card dished out because of Allan Ala'alatoa's swinging arm — and the soft contact it made with Matt Fagerson's head.

Instead of levelling the score, the furious Wallabies finished the half with 14 men but managed to respond well, setting up another chance for O'Connor from a similar position to the opening minutes.

This time he made no mistake and right before the half-time whistle the visitors earned their first three points.

The second 40 began in the same chaotic and untidy matter as the half that preceded it, with a succession of knock-ons and a crunching collision that left Australia's Taniela Tupou almost staggering to the touchline to be replaced.

But minutes later the Wallabies got their first scrum of the second half spot on and Rob Leota charged through from Izaia Perese's offload.

O'Connor sent through the conversion and, despite still being down a man, the away side led by three.

But leave it to debutant Ewan Ashman to score a superb try as he twisted and stretched around the corner while being tackled into touch by Parese.

Russell was off the mark from the conversion and for a moment that appeared fatal when O'Connor sent a penalty through the posts and sent Australia a point ahead going into the final 15 minutes.

And the playmaker got the chance to make amends from a penalty of his own however as this nailbiter inched to its conclusion, and he duly delivered.

Scotland then forced a turnover followed by O'Connor missing touch with seconds to go, and that finally allowed Murrayfield to breathe and bask in victory.
