Scotland player ratings from hard earned draw in Denmark

Angus Gunn 8

Was tested inside five minutes with a free header for Dolberg, but this would’ve been ruled out for offside had it gone in. Off his line quickly to smother Biereth. Made a great double-save late on, but Hojlund was offside this time.

Aaron Hickey 8

It was great to see the Brentford right-back back in action after almost two years out. He looked comfortable in the side, and is undoubtedly an upgrade on both Nathan Patterson and Anthony Ralston, which made a huge difference to the team’s balance. A very pleasing contribution. Booked.

John Souttar 8

As was the case with his centre-back partner Hanley, they were clearly instructed to be aggressive and get tight to be Dolberg and Biereth. The latter, formerly of Motherwell, was right up for the battle. Made a good block to stop a decent Biereth shot.

Grant Hanley 9

He’s started more international games than league games for Norwich, Birmingham and Hibs since the 2022/23 season. Sceptics will understandably point to that and wonder why he’s still in the first XI. Tonight showed he still has something to offer. Brave block to halt a Dolberg effort from the edge of the area. Made another crucial intervention from Hojbjerg shot later on. His performance would be best summarised by throwing himself in front of everything.

Andy Robertson 8

Consistently provided enticing deliveries all game that were just asking to be attacked. Looked fresh despite lack of game time for Liverpool or late.

Lewis Ferguson 7

A pretty solid display from the Bologna captain, going about his business quietly, but putting himself in amongst it against a strong Danish midfield. Kept things simple. Booked.

Ryan Christie 7

Enjoyed a bright start, floating some dangerous crosses into the box, which Adams was unlucky not to get onto. Should’ve done better with a curled effort from edge of the box after Scotland did well to win the ball in Denmark’s final third. Had a huge effort with a header back across goal. Was a lucky boy only to see yellow for a bad tackle. Quiet second half.

Scott McTominay 7

Unusual poor play from the talisman not to slip in Adams, who would’ve been clear through on goal. Was again poor when he was caught out on the ball in the centre circle, allowing the Danes to break too easily. Tested Schmeichel after a driving run into the box.

John McGinn 8

Ran himself into the ground playing wide on the left, having plenty of defensive duties. Retained possession well, and maintained a threat when Scotland looked to counter. Impressed when winning the ball back before crossing brilliantly for Christie during the first half in a big chance for the visitors. Helped the Scots get off to an encouraging start after the break, which saw his shot blocked.

Che Adams 8

Carried on from his last Scotland appearance, scoring a hattrick in Vaduz, to put in another top performance. Looked lively throughout and kept the Danish backline on their toes. Should’ve had an assist to his name after a great pick out to find his strike partner in acres of space, but Dykes couldn’t take advantage. Booked.

Lyndon Dykes 6

Had Scotland’s first effort of the night on 13 minutes as he met Robertson’s delivery, but headed high over the bar. Had to do better when teed up by Adams, but dallied too long when looking to shoot.

Subs:

Max Johnston (for Hickey, 69’) 4

Booked for handball just two minutes after coming on which led to a VAR check for a potential upgrade for the denial of a goalscoring opportunity, but the referee stuck by his initial call. Settled well after to help see out the clean sheet.

George Hirst (for Adams, 83’) 3

Had to play in Gannon-Doak wide left, but couldn’t get his head up to see him.

Gannon-Doak (for Dykes, 83’) 4

Positive play right from the off, keeping the ball in play to get a shot away.

Kenny McLean (for Christie, 83’) 3

On for fresh legs.
