Scotland player ratings as Kieran Tierney runs the show in battling draw with Austria

Scotland held Austria to a point at Hampden as their first game of 2022 World Cup qualifying ended all square.

Steve Clarke 's team were made to work hard for it and struggled with the towering presence of Sasa Kalajdzic, who netted twice for the visitors.

But Scotland had the answer on both occasions. Grant Hanley cancelled out the first with a powerful header, before an astonishing John McGinn overhead kick made sure of the point just five minutes from time.

The home side were chasing the winner by the end but after Scott McTominay smashed a free-kick over from distance, both sides had to make do with a share of the spoils.

Here's how Record Sport rated the Scotland players.

DAVID MARSHALL

The hero of Serbia recovered from injury to take his place between the sticks for the 42nd time and he made a couple of decent saves that he’d have expected to make. Not helped by defence after saving the initial shot that led to the first Austria goal - 7

GRANT HANLEY

The Norwich stopper was back in blue for the first time in three years, winning his 30th cap in the middle of the back three. An early booking meant he was walking a tightrope but stayed on it long enough to equalise with a brilliant header - 7

JACK HENDRY

The on-loan Celtic man’s superb form in Belgium catapulted him straight into the team for his first competitive start in his fourth outing and looked composed and confident on the right side of the back three - 7

KIERAN TIERNEY

Slotted in at the left centre back role but was given licence to break forward in support of Robertson, which he did to great effect and at times was Scotland’s main attacking threat. - 8

STEPHEN O’DONNELL

Clarke’s Mr Reliable in the right wing back role and did all he could to curb the influence of the world class David Alaba in direct opposition to him and could be pleased with his night’s work. Great delivery for equaliser - 6

JOHN McGINN

Was deployed in a deeper role than of late but couldn’t get a foothold in the game in the early stages and cut a frustrated figure in the first half before being deployed further forward to greater effect, topped off with a fabulous equaliser - 7

SCOTT McTOMINAY

His superb midfield displays for Manchester United meant a return to the national team engine room and after a quiet start began to exert influence with his passing and physicality. Was solid rather spectacular but played his part - 6

STUART ARMSTRONG

Sparkling club form rewarded with a rare start at this level and couldn’t find the target with a couple of efforts from distance before coming so close to levelling after the break. Replaced by Adams - 6

ANDY ROBERTSON

Left wing back role for the captain but Stefan Lainer managed to curb much of his attacking prowess in the first half, although he eventually won that battle and had a much more productive second period - 6

RYAN CHRISTIE

(SNS Group / SFA)

Was charged with getting close to Dykes and looked capable when in possession but wasn’t on the ball often enough. First half booking and couldn’t take the best chance of the first half. Claimed an assist for McGinn’s goal by keeping the move alive - 7

LYNDON DYKES

The manager showed loyalty to the QPR striker by giving him the nod over Adams but he was well marshalled and didn’t make a huge impact. Unlucky when keeper’s clearance didn’t fall for him to get a shot away. Better second half before making way for McGregor - 6

CHE ADAMS

Debut for the striker in place of Armstrong after 65 minutes as Scotland searched for an equaliser. Looked lively but no chances - 3

CALLUM McGREGOR

Got the last 13 minutes for Dykes and slotted into midfield, allowing McGinn to move further forward - 3

KENNY McLEAN

Late replacement for Christie and not enough time to make an impact - 2
