Scotland player ratings as David Marshall's penalty heroics have a nation dreaming

The national side are just 90 minutes away from ending a 22-year wait to reach a national tournament after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Israel.

Goalless for 90 minutes then another 30 in extra-time, Scotland put us through the wringer. As they often do. And as John McGinn lined up the opening spot-kick we all probably wondered if this was the end of the road.

But the footballing gods decided to let us have this one. David Marshall's superb save from Eran Zahavi's opening penalty kept us ahead up until Kenny McLean won the tie with the final kick.

It wasn't pretty, it wasn't convincing. But the job is done.

And the reality is Steve Clarke has brought Scotland as close to an international finals as any of his predecessors since autumn 1998.

Here's how Record Sport rated the national side against Israel.

Scotland player ratings

David Marshall - 7

Plucked a couple of crosses out of the sky and one straightforward save but had relatively little to do until the shootout heroics.

Scott McTominay - 7

Another outing in his unaccustomed back-three role and did better but he should have scored at the other end.

Declan Gallagher - 7

Motherwell man won his third cap at heart of the back three and was imposing and powerful when needed.

Liam Cooper - 7

Nothing flashy on the left side of the back three but kept his concentration and was solid.

Stephen O’Donnell - 6

Right wing-back found himself on the back foot too often against his opposite number Elhamed.

Ryan Jack - 6

Anchored the middle of the park, closed down space and used the ball simply when he had it. Not flashy but did well.

John McGinn - 6

Needed to get closer to Dykes, who was holding the ball up well but needed support from deep.

Callum McGregor - 6

Quiet start but had moments of promise although most of his good work was done defensively in snuffing out crosses.

Andy Robertson - 6

Had a real battle with the energetic Eli Dasa on the left, who gave as good as he got and didn’t let the captain influence the game.

Lyndon Dykes - 7

Lovely early knockdown to McGinn showed what he can bring to the team. Linked the play, drew fouls and had another good game.

Oli McBurnie - 5

No lack of willingness to run things down and gave his all but rarely made a dent in the Israeli defence before being replaced by Shankland.

Substitutes

Lawrence Shankland - 3

On for McBurnie after 72 minutes and showed some neat touches.

Ryan Fraser - 4

Replaced Jack with eight minutes of normal time remaining and was lively.

Callum Paterson - 2

Took over from Dykes for extra time but couldn’t get on the end of anything.

Kenny McLean - 2

Came on late in extra time for Stephen O’Donnell.
