Scotland needs a strong opposition and Labour are failing to make SNP up their game

Nicola Sturgeon appears to be incredibly popular – among Labour voters.

It’s not the only grim finding for the party which once looked all conquering in Scotland.

A report seen by the Daily Record points a lot of the blame in Labour leader Richard Leonard’s direction.

The party is in “peril” and struggling to connect with the public.

So far, the remedies have always sounded instantly tired and old. Labour desperately needs a shake.

How many election drubbings ended with a promise to listen to the electorate?

How many times have Labour turned in on themselves on the constitution?

The SNP, as the latest polls show, are so far ahead it should be a source of instant and damning shame to opposition chiefs.

It doesn’t even have to be about replacing the SNP in Government. It would be a start if Scotland had an effective opposition to properly hold them to account.

Tory “leader” Ruth Davidson flopped at First Minister’s Questions yesterday. Leonard is clearly in trouble.

But neither leader was short of serious ammunition in a week when the First Minister and her deputy both apologised in an utterly shambolic U-turn on exams.

Governments can actually get better when their opponents are respected and strong enough to make a  difference.
