Scotland manager latest: Alex McLeish set to face fans for first time with Scottish Cup double

Alex McLeish is set to return to the public eye as Scotland boss this weekend at Hampden at the Scottish Cup semi-finals.

The Scotland manager is due to attend Hearts' last four clash with Inverness on Saturday followed by Aberdeen's tie with Celtic on Sunday.

McLeish's position as boss has been subject of intense speculation after Scotland made a terrible start to their Euro 2020 campaign by losing 3-0 in Kazakhstan.

A underwhelming 2-0 win over San Marino three days later failed to stop the criticism.

The furore even included claims McLeish was suffering from deteriorating health.

But these rumours have been strongly dismissed to Mirror Sport by sources close to the 60-year-old.

And McLeish is understood to be planning ahead for the double header against Cyprus and Belgium in June.

McLeish has already secured a Euro 2020 play-off berth via Nations League success in Group C1 over Albania and Israel.

But from the side who beat Albania and Israel in November, several – including Allan McGregor, Andy Robertson, Ryan Christie, Steven Fletcher and Ryan Fraser - were missing against Kazakhstan on an artificial pitch.

McLeish is believed to feel subsequent criticism has been over the top from quarters who always wanted Michael O'Neill to be Gordon Strachan's successor as Scotland boss instead.

But the SFA's first pick opted to stay with Northern Ireland instead and sign a new contract there .

McLeish continues to have the support of SFA president Alan McRae following his appointment in February 2018 on a two-year deal.

But the SFA board — scheduled to meet at Hampden on April 18 — could yet take a different perspective.

Scotland's 3-0 loss to Kazakhstan was reported to be officially their worst-ever result in a competitive match.
