Scotland lockdown: Scotrail warn customers not to travel 'unless totally necessary'

Rail operator Scotrail is urging people living in the central belt not to travel by train if it's 'not necessary.'

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon announced tighter restrictions across much of mainland Scotland earlier this week, including completely closing down bars and restaurants for 16 days from Friday 9 October at 6pm.

Announcing the new restrictions on Wednesday, the First Minister said: "We are asking people living in these five health board areas to avoid public transport unless it is absolutely necessary – for example for going to school or to work, if home working is not an option.

'We are not imposing mandatory travel restrictions at this stage, and specifically, we are not insisting that people cancel any half term breaks they have planned."

After being asked by many customers if they could still travel by rail to the central belt, Scotrail said on Twitter: "On Wednesday @ScotGov issued new travel guidance for the Central Belt.

"People should only travel by rail to, from, or within the central belt when it's necessary to do so."

Transport Scotland have also issued new guidance for Scots travelling to and from the central belt saying: "We are asking people to limit travel where possible and only leave the health board area they live in if they need to.

"People living in the five health board areas are advised not to travel outside the health board area they live in, unless they need to."
