Scotland lockdown rules: Nicola Sturgeon confirms Level 2 move for most of country on May 17

The majority of areas in Scotland will move from Level 3 restrictions to Level 2 from Monday, as the country continues to ease out of lockdown.

The move on May 17 will see major changes to indoor meetings, hospitality, physical distancing and the reopening of venues.

There are a few exceptions to the Level 2 move, including Moray which will remain in Level 3 amid a spike in cases, and a change to Level 1 for Scotland’s island communities.

We'll bring you more on this breaking news story shortly - here's an overview of the changes coming your way on Monday.

Follow today's lockdown updates including the First Minister's briefing as it happens

Meeting with people

Speaking at today's briefing, Nicola Sturgeon announced that from Monday, people will be able to meet in each other's homes, including overnight stays. This was initially intended to have a limit of up to four people from two households. However, due to the low levels of covid transmission, this has been changed to up to six people from three households.

Meanwhile, outdoor meetings have moved to groups of eight people from up to eight households rather than six people from six households.

The First Minister said: "It is almost eight months now since most of us have been able to meet in each other's homes and even longer for those of us living in Glasgow and Lanarkshire.

"I know how much everyone has been looking forward to doing this again."

Ms Sturgeon also announced that from Monday, people can hug their loved ones again.

However, she stressed it "remains vital to be cautious and to ease these restrictions carefully" with hugs only permitted in planned gatherings in homes and gardens.

Ms Sturgeon added: "Please use careful judgement - close physical contact does still carry risk."

Hospitality

From Monday, alcohol will be permitted indoors in pubs and restaurants until 10.30pm.

Groups of up to six from three households will also be permitted to meet in pubs and restaurants.

Venues, events and sport

From May 17, a number of venues will be able to reopen, including cinemas, theatres, concert halls, comedy clubs, amusement arcades, and snooker halls.

Amateur dramatic group will also be able to perform, with change initially applying to outdoor spaces only.

Colleges and universities will also have more flexibility for in person learning.

Meanwhile, adults can resume outdoor contact sports, and more than one person will be allowed to sing during religious services.

The standard guest limit to specific events from Monday will increase to up to 100 people for indoor events; up to 250 for outdoor unseated events; and up to 500 attend outdoor event with seating.

International travel

The First Minister confirmed Scotland will introduce the traffic light system utilised in England for international travel.

This means travellers from countries placed on the 'red list' will have to self-isolated in a managed isolation hotel for 10 days upon their arrival in Scotland. Countries on this list include Turkey, the Maldives, and Nepal.

Countries on the 'amber list' will mean travellers have to self-isolate at home for 10 days and take two PCR tests within that period.

Lastly, travellers from countries on the 'green list' will need to take a PCR test upon their arrival but will not be required to self-isolate. Countries on this list include Australia, New Zealand, Brunei, Israel, Portugal and Singapore.

Ms Sturgeon said: "We still intend to be highly cautious with international travel given the risk of new variants."

She continued: "The Scottish Government will continue to take decisions that continue to be right for Scotland. We will not sign up for decisions that could put our progress at risk."

For people looking to plan holidays over the summer, she urged them to "err on the side of caution and have a staycation this summer".
