Scotland learn World Cup play-off fate as Steve Clarke's side avoid European giants on road to Qatar

Scotland will face Ukraine in their World Cup 2022 play-off semi-final match at Hampden as the nation's road to Qatar is set in stone.

Head coach Steve Clarke's side have also avoided potentially daunting tasks against Italy and Portugal in the final stage should they make it, with Wales or Austria awaiting in that arena.

That game will be away from Hampden.

Scotland have to win both of the consecutive one-off ties in order to make the biggest stage in football.

An eye-catching Euro 2020 campaign which resulted in a quarter-final spot has been built upon by Ukraine. They're unbeaten since the summer and finished qualifying unbeaten - but with six draws and just two wins.

Hampden will host the playoff on March 24 or 25 in what is sure to be a rapturous occasion, before a final days later.

Clarke's men have made this stage after finishing second in qualification Group F on a healthy 23 points.

There is real optimism for the nation's chances of making Qatar after making Euro 2020, and six consecutive qualifying victories in succession.
