Scotland launches recruitment for 'army of volunteers' to help beat coronavirus

The Scottish Government has announced the launch of a new volunteer programme for those wishing to lend a hand to friends, neighbours and the NHS during the coronavorius.

The news comes as the First Minister confirmed a total of 41 people in Scotland have sadly died due to coronavirus - with 139 new cases in diagnosed in Scotland overnight.

People will be able to register their interest on the  Ready Scotland  website from tomorrow.

Members of the public can then become a community reserve volunteer.

In her daily briefing, Nicola Sturgeon today say: "I know there are many people who are currently fit and health and perhaps no longer at university and are looking for other ways to help.

"Over the past week the Scottish Government has been looking at ways to identify and tap into and utilise that desire to help.

"We wanted to take a bit of time to get this right so when people are signing up as volunteers we know that offer can be acted upon and utilised as quickly as possible."

Sturgeon said she was "very grateful to everyone who has and continues to do the right thing by staying at home" and said the measures to fight coronvirus, including the current lockdown, are "likely" to be in place until June.

She added: "All of you are helping to slow the spread of the disease, helping us to protect the NHS and, ultimately, helping us to save lives.

"Nevertheless, we are now at the stage where the number of cases in Scotland is growing quite rapidly and that is already putting pressure on the NHS and care services and it is likely to put even great pressure on them in the future."
