Scotland issued with 17 flood warning as forecasters warn of more thunderstorms

Forecasters have warned of further flooding as thunderstorms threaten to batter Scotland once again today.

Experts at the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) have issued 17 flood alerts and six flood warnings across the country.

Aberdeenshire, Tayside, Dundee and Angus are expected to see the worst of the floods on Wednesday.

Water levels at the rivers Carron, South Esk, Isla and Earn are all said to have burst their banks at parts.

‘Biblical’ flash floods caused chaos across Scotland on Tuesday night due to heavy rainfall and lightning storms.

Schools have been forced to close and there are heavy delays on a number of public transport services across the east of the country.

The Met Office has issued another yellow warning for more areas of Scotland today as further thunderstorms look set to cause more disruption.

Experts warn that some parts of the country could see around 40mm of rain fall in just one hour between 3pm and 9pm on Wednesday.

Central, Tayside, Fife, Grampian, Highlands, Borders and Strathclyde areas could see the worst of the conditions.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “During Wednesday afternoon some thunderstorms may develop over the high ground of Scotland. Whilst most areas will see a dry day, where these thunderstorms do develop they are likely to be very intense with the potential for 30-40 mm of rain in less than an hour along with frequent lightning and large hail.

"These thunderstorms should die out later in the evening.”
