Scotland is bookies' favourite to get white Christmas as snow expected to fall on big day

Bookies have slashed the odds on Scots cities being the most likely in the UK to see a white Christmas this year.

Aberdeen is the 2-1 favourite with bookmaker Coral for which area of the country can expect blankets of festive snow on December 25.

Glasgow and Edinburgh come next in the chart, at 5-2

A white out in Newcastle has odds of 3-1 while winter wonderland conditions in Manchester, Liverpool or Leeds on the big day get a 5-1 chance from the firm.

"Our betting suggests that the Scottish cities have the greatest chance of seeing snow fall on Christmas Day, with Aberdeen the most likely at 2-1," said Coral's Harry Aitkenhead.

"It is 8-1 for snow to fall in London on Christmas Day and give the capital the White Christmas everybody will be dreaming about," he added.

Nottingham, Birmingham, Cardiff all have more chance than London of seeing snow on Christmas Day, with odds of 6-1, while Belfast and Bristol are 10 - 1.

The last time Scotland saw a full-blown white Christmas was in 2010, the second in a row after a snowy big day in 2009.

Scotland holds the honour of having experienced the whitest Christmas in the UK's recorded history, when 47cm of snow fell on Christmas Day 1981.
