Scotland hits hottest day of 2022 so far as temperatures could soar over weekend

Scotland has hit the hottest temperature of the year so far as forecasters say the mercury could get even warmer tomorrow.

It's a bank holiday weekend dream come true as warm and sunny weather lies ahead.

Temperatures will be scorching - at least by Scottish standards - over the second half of the four-day Platinum Jubilee weekend.

The Met Office has marked June 3 as Scotland's hottest day yet in 2022 as Achnagart in the Highlands reached 20.6C.

What's more, the forecaster said conditions 'could be warmer still tomorrow' and BBC Weather echoed the sentiment, tweeting the record is 'likely' to be beaten on Saturday.

"Further north it'll be a dry start," said Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth about Saturday.

"The best of the sunshine across the northwest of Scotland and Northern Ireland where it's likely to be quite a warm day."

The thermostat will peak at 20C in some areas over the weekend in northern and western parts of the country.

Elsewhere, temperatures will reach the mid to late teens.

It'll be welcome news for sun-worshippers downtrodden after gloomy weather dominated the month of May.

Conditions won't be quite so lovely for people further south due to heavy showers and thunderstorms rolling in Saturday night and across Sunday.

Yellow thunderstorm warnings have been issued for parts of Wales and southwest England.

As summer 2022 kicks off, it's worth noting 2021 was one of the hottest years on record in Scotland.

The Met Office says it is 'quite unusual' for the highest temperature of August to occur in Scotland, but the scorching 27.2C weather at Tyndrum on August 25 set that record in 2021.

The mercury inched even higher on September 8, 2021 when Charterhall in the Scottish Borders hit 28.6C.
