Scotland goal of the year: Wishaw hot shot vying with top stars

Coltness High pupil Lennon Miller says it's surreal to be up against Aston Villa star John McGinn for the title of Scotland's goal of the year.

The 15 year old midfielder's stunning strike against England from halfway down the pitch is up against McGinn's spectacular goal against Austria, Caroline Weir's strike against Cyprus, Erin Cuthbert v Faroe Islands, Claire Emslie v Faroe Islands, Alex Lowry v Croatia and Ben Williamson's effort against Northern Ireland.

Supporters can cast their vote for Lennon here, but they will need to be fast, as voting closes today.

It was a debut to remember for Lennon - who is the son of former Scotland international Lee - back in August, and although the young Scots lost 3-2 at St George's Park, it couldn't take the shine off a great day for the Motherwell under-18 starlet.

Lennon said: "I can't believe it, it's quite surreal when I heard it, actually.

"I look before every game, saw the keeper off his line, thought I may as well give this a go, and luckily for me it went in.

"It would be brilliant to win it, it would mean everything, but all the goals are brilliant.

"I'd be proud to win it, though."

Lennon is up against some top opposition, including Aston Villa's John McGinn (SNS Group)

Former Aberdeen hero Lee - who is now a hairdresser at the Old Anvil Hair Room in Hamilton - said Lennon barely mentioned to him that he was up for such a prestigious award.

Lee, 38, said: "Lennon doesn't bother about things like that at all.

"He commented on it in passing while I was cutting his hair. He said 'did you see I was nominated for the Scotland goal of the year?' so I thought it was a youth thing.

"These things come up quite often on Facebook, different wee competitions, but I looked into it and I said 'do you know how big this is'!

"He takes things in his stride, he's not arrogant or cocky in any way, he's just a kid that's grown up loving football.

"For me, as his parent, it's such an achievement for such a young person; he was only 14 when he scored that goal, on his debut with Scotland, away to England, and the stature of it is incredible.

"To me it would be great, an incredible achievement for a kid of such a young age to be in with incredible names like John McGinn and the women's national team as well - it's brilliant to have people stand up and take notice.

"It's not often you see somebody score from the halfway line in such an important game against your rivals, on their own pitch down in England and on his debut.

Dad Lee, who currently plays for East Kilbride, is now a hairdresser, having previously starred for Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Livingston (Sunday Mail)

"It was brilliant and I was there to see it, so I was delighted. He's just a really good kid who loves his football."

Lee would love it if Lennon followed in his footsteps, but says it has all been down to his son's own hard work.

He said: "I'm delighted to pass the baton on to him, but he's got a lot of hard work ahead of him. He's got a long way to go, but he's doing all the right things, and I'm just there to support him.

"He has done it himself, he's put a lot of hard work in, and it's nothing to do with me.

"Growing up I gave him some pointers, and I still give him pointers here and there, but he's done it off his own bat."
