Scotland 'gamble' on Ryan Fraser's fitness with Euro 2020 call-up despite Steve Bruce's warning

Newcastle United winger Ryan Fraser has been called up to Scotland's Euro 2020 squad - despite Steve Bruce's warning over his fitness.

The former Bournemouth attacker has struggled with injuries this season and has largely been a peripheral figure on Tyneside so far.

The 27-year-old has only made nine Premier League starts in black-and-white, and has recently returned to training after undergoing surgery for a groin injury suffered in March.

Fraser's best moments this season have come in a Scotland shirt, netting in consecutive World Cup qualifiers against Israel and the Faroe Islands before his latest lay-off.

It is this form which has led Scotland boss Steve Clarke to name the winger in his 26-man squad on Wednesday for the rearranged European Championships this summer.

Fraser will join the squad for a pre-tournament camp in Portugal before group games against the Czech Republic, England and Croatia.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday ahead of hosting Sheffield United for the final home fixture of the season, Bruce admitted he was unsure whether Scotland would be selecting the winger.

He said: "It has been a difficult time for Ryan

"I would think that would be a gamble given that he’s missed the last six or seven weeks. He’s not played any real football or even trained in that period.

"But with the problems Scotland have, and with being able to pick 26 players, I don’t know.

"It would certainly be a gamble though."
