Scotland fly out for Euro 2020 training camp as Steve Clarke's men gear up for tournament return

Del Amitri's famously morose song implored Scotland "don't come home too soon" the last time we were in a major tournament.

That was the 1998 World Cup in France and Craig Brown's side were indeed back in short order after crashing out at the group stage.

This time around the national team will be home right from the start, as Steve Clarke 's side face the Czech Republic at Hampden in their opening game of Euro 2020.

After a short hop over the border to face England at Wembley it's back to Glasgow for a showdown with Croatia.

Thanks to the format of the European Championships one win may be enough to get out the group and Clarke's men are taking preparation seriously.

On Thursday they flew out to Spain for a pre-tournament training camp.

They'll face the Netherlands and and Luxembourg while being based at La Finca, with Clarke aiming to give the players some time to recharge after a difficult season.

The manager said: "When the domestic season ends there will be a mental and physical deficit to overcome in a short period of time and that’s why La Finca will be so important, in part due to the unpredictability of the weather in Scotland but also the close proximity of La Finca to the two matches we are obliged to play.”
