Scotland flood warning as Met Office extend thunderstorm alert to last 11 hours

Scotland is once again on flood alert after forecasters issued a weather warning for thunderstorms as the wet spell enters its fourth day.

The Met Office alert is in place from midday until 11pm today, with torrential rain, lightning and hail expected to lash down across an 11-hour period.

Up to three inches of rain is expected to fall over several hours in some places after a wash-out weekend caused flooding in parts of Scotland.

SEPA have issued flood alerts in 12 places, including the Central Belt, Dundee and Angus, Aberdeenshire, Tayside and Edinburgh.

Heavy showers could bring chaos to the roads, with some closures and difficult driving conditions expected.

The flooding and lightning strikes could also cause delays and cancellations of trains and buses, while there is a chance of power cuts across Scotland.

Homeowners should be on high alert for rising floodwater as homes and businesses could be 'flooded quickly' during the bad spell of weather.

The Met Office forecast reads: "Heavy, slow-moving downpours will develop on Monday.

"Some places will miss these, but where they do occur, 15-30 mm rain may fall in a short space of time, perhaps with 50-70 mm over several hours in a few places.

"Some of these downpours may also be thundery, most likely over eastern Scotland. The showers will die out during the evening.
