Scotland flanker Hamish Watson issues public apology for angry comments after Wales game

Scotland flanker Hamish Watson has apologised for his post-match comments after he criticised Zander Fagerson's red card in Wales' win at Murrayfield.

Watson had initially branded the call to send off Scotland prop Fagerson for a no-arms clearout on Wyn Jones "rubbish" and "not rugby" following the 25-24 defeat to Wales on Saturday.

But he has since taken to social media to show some remorse for his comments.

Replying to a video of his initial post-match interview, Watson tweeted: "Poor comments from me, emotions were very high after losing a very tight match.

"Players health is paramount."

His initial comments had been criticised given the ongoing problems that rugby faces with brain injuries.

Last year, a group of former players, including England World Cup winner Steve Thompson and Wales international Alix Popham, revealed they had been diagnosed with early onset dementia, probable Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and traumatic brain injury. You can read the harrowing story of Adam Hughes, a former Welsh rugby player who has been diagnosed with brain injuries at the age of 30 here.

A legal case for alleged negligence against World Rugby, the Rugby Football Union and the Welsh Rugby Union has now begun, with calls for the amount of contact in training to be limited in order to minimise the risks as rugby tries to find a way forward.

And many had pointed to Watson's comments as careless in the current climate.

Following Saturday's match, Watson had said : "That was a rubbish call.

"An absolutely dreadful call. That's not rugby, that call.

“Zander is absolutely fine. We've already got round him. He's a great player and a big part of everything we do with Scotland.

“He can hold his head high, I think. We lost that game in the last 10 minutes of the first half and the first 10 of the second. We lost that game when we had 15 on the field. Zander has nothing to worry about.

“I haven't heard the comms from the TV but I've heard from other people that the TMO said it wasn't a red, then the ref has overruled him. The ref has the right to do that if he thinks that's the right call, but we as players strongly disagree with that call.

“As soon as I saw it on the TV, I was thinking: 'That's not even a penalty'. It is what it is. The ref has overruled it and that's his decision, he has the power to do that. There's not much else we can say. We don't think it's a red, a yellow or even a penalty. But that's the way the game is going.”

During his post-match interview, Watson also claimed Scotland's indiscipline was the reason they lost, adding: “Wales didn’t win it. We had that game in our hands and we chucked it away.

“France away is going to be 10 times harder than the game on Saturday.”
