Scotland fans receive Euro 2020 knock backs as ballot process ongoing to determine Hampden golden tickets

Some might have had an eye on what way the purple and peach papers fell this weekend as the Scottish elections took centre stage.

But now the counting is done, there's another ballot at the forefront of football fans' minds.

Over the course of Saturday afternoon and evening UEFA have been working through those hopeful fans who snapped up tickets for Euro 2020 matches at Hampden away back in June 2019 - and deciding who will be lucky enough to keep their place for the tournament.

It's hard to imagine but Covid-19 was only the stuff of disaster films back then - and Steve Clarke's Scotland heroes wouldn't qualify for another 17 months.

The world has changed a lot and of course it's inevitable some will miss out on the footballing party of the summer given the national stadium's capacity has been quartered due to a still-present coronavirus risk. Any crowd is a bonus after over a year of locked stadia.

But that won't ease the pain for those thousands of Tartan Army forward-thinkers who have seen two years worth of planning go down the tubes.

Those who bought tickets in UEFA's general sale back in 2019 are advised to check their email - and pray they don't receive this message of doom informing their tickets are being refunded.

It reads: "Dear Football Fan, we are sorry to inform you that your ticket(s) for UEFA EURO 2020 have been cancelled as per the ballot process for matches where the number of sold tickets exceeded the new permitted seating capacities.

"For tickets purchased through the Participating National Associations sales programme, the rules of the respective fan clubs were applied."

Hampden will host four games at the Euros, including Scotland's clashes against the Czech Republic and Croatia.

The latter two teams will also square off in Mount Florida while a last 16 tie is set to take place there too.
