Scotland fans handed Euro 2020 boost as final decision on Hampden attendance in Holyrood's hands

Uefa has handed the Tartan Army a major boost ahead of Scotland’s return from the international tournament wilderness by lifting a cap on the number of fans allowed inside stadia.

The Scottish government have long stressed it is too soon to decide whether Hampden will be open to supporters when Steve Clarke’s side kick off their Euro 2020 campaign in Glasgow against the Czech Republic on June 14.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has warned the status of the COVID-19 pandemic and tally of vaccinations will dictate whether fans will be in attendance.

European football’s governing body previously imposed a 30 per cent limit on stadium capacity for the tournament finals - which are due to be played across a number of cities.

But that has now been lifted, meaning the final decision will rest in the hands of local governments and authorities.

It will likely be down to Holyrood for the last word on how many, if any fans, will be permitted to attend.

Teams will also be granted the use of five substitutes implemented throughout Europe over the course of this campaign.

The measure is designed to help player workload during a season already truncated by the pandemic and has already been used in March's World Cup 2022 qualifying matches and will be extended through the summer.

Scotland face the Czechs and Croatia at Hampden in Group D either side of a clash with Auld Enemies England at Wembley.
