Scotland faces flash floods and lightning strikes as severe thunderstorms set to hit

Scotland's sunny weekend weather is set to come to an abrupt halt with the Met Office issuing a Yellow warning predicting three days of severe thunderstorms across the country starting from Monday.

Temperatures soared as high as 28°C over the weekend but the tropical conditions are set to be short-lived.

Instead, weather experts expect clouds and rain to arrive in force in some areas of the country tomorrow.

Thundery showers are due to start hitting some parts of Scotland with the temperatures dipping to 11°C overnight.

There is also a chance of flooding, lightning strikes and even hailstones though the changeable weather makes it difficult for the Met Office to be precise as to the locations that will be hit.

The Met Office warning says there is a small chance of some businesses and homes being flooded as a result of flash flooding.

Members of the public are advised to expect delays and cancellations to public transport where flooding or lightning strikes occur, with difficult driving conditions also likely and an “increased chance of accidents”.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Some places are likely to see severe thunderstorms but with significant uncertainty in location and timing.

“There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

Glengarnock in Ayrshire was badly hit by flooding last week (Clr Donald Reid)

“Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.”

Last week torrential rain caused flash flooding that left motorists stranded and led to travel chaos in parts of Scotland.

The West coast felt the brunt of the  summer  downpours with  Renfrewshire  and Ayrshire particularly hard hit.

Drivers ended up stuck on Lochwinnoch Road in Renfrewhsire after the River Garnock burst its banks.

And in Ayrshire, the residents of Glengarnock faced a huge clean up operation after their village was badly flooded for the second time in 12 years.
