Scotland face quarter-final sweat as Typhoon Hagibis threatens to end Rugby World Cup dream

Scotland could crash out of the Rugby World Cup because of the typhoon set to hit Japan.

World Rugby are set to hold an emergency meeting to discuss their options for Sunday's games with the worst weather coming over the weekend.

Typhoon Hagibis is expected to cause the most issues in Tokyo but will hit the whole country.

Scotland face Japan in a winner takes all clash in Yokohama but if World Rugby decide to cancel the match instead of moving it to another venue which could deal with the weather, Gregor Townsend's men would be on their way home.

Reports in France suggest the governing body would prefer a cancellation and it would see both Scotland and Japan given two points each.

With Ireland due to face Samoa and expected to get a bonus point victory, it means Scotland would miss out on a quarter-final tie with New Zealand.

The decision is expected to be made later on Wednesday and would leave Scotland stars desperately hoping for an unexpected shock Samoa victory.

World Rugby are also set to cancel the clash between England and France but both of those teams are already qualified.

Scotland battered Russia 61-0 in their third group game earlier on Thursday with George Horne grabbing a hat-trick of tries.

Townsend had rested a number of his senior players for the game with the likes of Stuart Hogg not even included in the replacements to ensure they were ready for Sunday's now-threatened clash with Japan.
