Scotland Euro 2020 foes Czech Republic in injury sweat for Hampden opener as group opponents could lose half their backline

Czech Republic face a major defensive sweat ahead of their Euro opener against Scotland.

Jaroslav Silhavy could be without half of his preferred backline for the Hampden showdown in seven days’ time.

Silhavy is already missing banned Ondrej Kudela following the Slavia Prague veteran’s UEFA ban for racially abusing Rangers star Glen Kamara.

But now Sparta Prague stopper Ondrej Celustka is a major doubt for the clash against Steve Clarke ’s side after going off injured at half-time in Friday’s 4-0 friendly thrashing by Italy.

And adding to Silhavy’s concerns is Bristol City skipper Tomas Kalas who missed the Italy clash and will be assessed along with Celustka by Czech medics at their base back in Prague.

Celustka is nursing a muscle injury in his leg and Silhavy admits the 31-year-old is touch and go for his side's crucial opening fixture in European Championships.

The 21-times capped stopper and Kudela made up half the Czech back four for their last three competitive matches in March’s World Cup qualifiers.

They were the central pairing for the Nations League match at Hampden in October which Scotland won 1-0.

Silhavy said: “The doctors will let me know if they are available for the match against Scotland.

“For Tomas Kalas, this is a more detailed examination, which he undergoes after his return to Prague. He himself says it should be good.

“About Ondrej Celustka, it is early, he has muscle problems. I have not yet spoken at all with the doctor on how serious it can be.”

The Czechs conclude their preparations for the competition with a friendly against Albania on Tuesday evening.

Scotland are eyeing next Monday’s opener as a chance to make a flying start to Group D.
