Scotland Euro 2020 crowd reduction causes huge financial blow as Glasgow set to miss out on £17million

A study has calculated that Glasgow stands to miss out on close to £17million thanks to restrictions around Euro 2020.

The tournament was due to be played last summer but was pushed back a year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Scotland qualified for their first tournament since the 1998 World Cup and will play two matches at Hampden.

Steve Clarke 's men will take on Croatia and the Czech Republic in Glasgow, as well as England at Wembley.

But the 50,000-seater arena will have a maximum of 17,000 fans in attendance, while there will be restrictions on fans travelling from abroad.

And it's estimated that while football fan visitors to Glasgow and locals would usually have brought in an estimated total of £22.35 million on accommodation, spending in bars and restaurants and other expenses, they are now only expected to spend around £5.6 million in the city - a massive loss of £16.75 million.

The study, by French firm  pitchinvasion.net, analyses the potential economic impact of Euro 2020 by calculating the potential revenue in accommodation and hospitality expenses for supporters who will travel and attend their country's matches in host cities, as well as those who will attend matches in their own country.

London is expected to lose around £57.1 million and Dublin £21.9 million because of the restrictions and, in the Irish capital's case, their inability to host any games.

Glasgow will lose more income than the likes of Rome, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Munich with the company using data which included the average spend by tourists in each country as well as the number of supporters at each venue.
