Scotland dealt Six Nations blow as Ireland edge out Murrayfield thriller

Scotland's Six Nations hopes were extinguished in a tough 24-27 loss to Ireland.

It wasn't the ideal start at Murrayfield for Gregor Townsend's men as just four minutes had elapsed when the visitors were awarded an early penalty and Johnny Sexton made no mistake.

Then just five minutes later a sequence of errors from Scotland - beginning from their own line-out - eventually let Robbie Henshaw through to deliver the first try.

Sexton failed to add the extras, however, as his kick struck the post, and the home side converted a penalty of their own soon after through Finn Russell.

Then followed their first try to take the lead in bizarre fashion when Stuart Hogg kicked off his own chest and was deemed not to have knocked on after a review. A period of madness followed near the line and Russell was eventually the man to finish off the move before then completing the conversion.

But the lead didn't last long with a pair of Ireland penalties - plus a missed attempt from Russell - handing Ireland a 10-14 lead at half-time.

Shortly after the restart Tadhg Beirne barged over to add to that advantage and Sexton added the extras before yet another three point effort sailed through.

But Scotland received a glimmer of hope when replacement Huw Jones cut through the opposing defence for his side's second try and Hamish Watson followed that up with a third to even things up in dramatic fashion.

However, that wasn't the last word as Sexton pummelled one last penalty through the posts and broke Scottish hearts.
