Scotland could eliminate coronavirus by end of summer

Scotland could eliminate Covid-19 before the summer is over.

A leading academic who advises the Scottish Government insists that July is crucial to seeing the country rid itself of the virus.

Speaking on the BBC Professor Devi Sridhar said: "If Scotland was an island - like New Zealand - I would say going for zero cases would be completely feasible."

The news comes as the country reported a third day in a row with no new coronavirus deaths.

Professor Sridhar explained that the public's compliance in following rules laid out in the various stages of lockdown easing is vital to the continued downward trend.

She explained: "I think Scotland is on track to eliminate coronavirus by the end of the summer, by looking at the rate of the decrease.

"But we are going to see little bumps, so it's a question of how small can you keep those bumps.

"July is a crucial month for people to follow the rules and guidance, and be sensible because the virus is still around and can still increase quite fast within days and weeks."

The news comes as it's reported  the UK Government is considering imposing a local lockdown following a 658 new cases in Leicester in just two weeks.
