Scotland coach Gregor Townsend claims Six Nations is 'not a level playing field' due to different club commitments

Scotland coach Gregor Townsend has taken a swipe at French rugby because star France-based fly-half Finn Russell is unavailable due to a head injury picked up on club duty.

Townsend believes the Six Nations is “not a level playing field” while some players have to play on rest weekends and others do not.

England were able to prevent their players turning out for clubs last weekend and Townsend did the same with most of his but France-based players had to play in the Top 14.

Russell duly picked up a head knock with Racing 92 last Sunday and has been replaced by Pete Horne in the No10 jersey.

Townsend said: “It’s disappointing he played a Sunday before a Test.

“I’m disappointed the French Federation, or the Top 14, had games on Sundays, which makes it very difficult to recover from any injury in a short time.”
