Scotland coach Gregor Townsend backs Gary Graham to 'play with pride and passion' after allegiance switch

Gary Graham was in the England squad a year ago and could finally make his international debut on Saturday — for Scotland.

Graham’s father George won 25 caps for Scotland as a prop and Newcastle flanker Gary has been named on the bench to face Italy.

He could be one of three new caps alongside Australia-born centre Sam Johnson and hooker Jake Kerr.

When in England’s squad last year (he was born in Stirling but grew up south of the border), Graham said he would love to face Scotland and “shove it in their faces”.

“I think his comments were taken out of context when he was joking around with his dad,” said coach Gregor Townsend.

“He learnt he has to watch what he says.

Sometimes if you don’t mean something you’d better not say it.

"But Gary will play with pride and passion if he gets the opportunity.”
