Scotland call-ups for six Lanarkshire stars as Steve Clarke picks Motherwell's Liam Kelly and extends deal

Steve Clarke has selected six Lanarkshire stars in his Scotland squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The five Lanarkshire-born players that represented Scotland at EURO 2020 have been joined by Cambuslang man Kenny McLean, who missed the tournament through injury.

Muirhouse man Kieran Tierney, Cambuslang's Kevin Nisbet, Blantyre man Declan Gallagher and Wishaw duo Stephen O'Donnell and David Turnbull are all in the squad.

Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly has also been rewarded for his outstanding form by receiving a call-up.

There had been doubts over Tierney's fitness after he hobbled off against Chelsea on Sunday but it was just cramp.

Motherwell captain O'Donnell and Hibernian's Nisbet missed their club's weekend fixtures with illness but both are selected in the squad.

Scotland face Denmark in their first World Cup qualifier before games against Moldova and Austria, which will be pivotal to their qualification hopes.

It was also announced that boss Clarke has extended his contract until the end of the EUOR 2024 qualifying campaign.

He said: "Firstly, I am proud to extend my stay as Scotland Head Coach and I look forward to working with my staff and players as we look to continue improving as a team.

"Being involved in EURO 2020 has given us all an added determination to return to a major tournament again as quickly as possible.

“I said in the dressing room after the Croatia game that we all had to learn lessons from playing at the EUROS and to come back stronger.

"I am committed to helping us return to a major tournament as quickly as possible and improving on what we have achieved until now. The players and my staff share that determination and the hard work resumes next month.

“We have made a solid start to the World Cup qualifiers and we are looking to take the experience of tournament football into the forthcoming games and to remain in contention for Qatar 2022 after the next triple-header."
