Scotland boss Steve Clarke told to make big decision over Chelsea's Billy Gilmour and Celtic ace

Scotland icon Barry Ferguson has urged Steve Clarke to give Chelsea's Billy Gilmour a chance during this summer's European Championships.

The 20-year-old has showcased his excellent talent when given the chance for the Blues, demonstrating impressive vision, close control and ability to read the game during his 22 games for the Chelsea first-team.

His notable technical ability earned him a place in Scotland's Euro 2020 squad, with the Tartan Army set to face England, Croatia and the Czech Republic in Group D.

And former Scotland great Barry Ferguson thinks that Steve Clarke should give Gilmour a chance to shine over the next month.

“There are so many options but two of the three are certainties. Scott McTominay and John McGinn will be crucial,” Ferguson told the Daily Record.

“[Scott] McTominay has developed into a top-class footballer and oozes class and confidence.

"[John] McGinn is a player I love watching for club and country. He’s a stand-out for Aston Villa and when he’s let off the leash to support Scotland’s front men he’s a huge part of our attacking armoury.

“The third player gave me my biggest dilemma because it’s so difficult to choose between [Celtic midfielder] Callum McGregor and Billy Gilmour.

"I’ve been a huge admirer of Callum for a long time. I think he’s a terrific midfielder and if he plays, great but I love watching Billy Gilmour do his thing. He is going to be a huge star in the game, make no mistake.

“The way he demands the ball and makes things happen, his ability to take it in tight spaces and just the absolute belief he has in his own ability. After a lot of consideration, I’m going for the Chelsea kid.”

Gilmour will hope Scotland boss Steve Clarke shares the same views as he bids to start for the Tartan Army during their tournament opener with the Czech Republic on Monday.
