Scotland battered by snow and ice as Met office issue multiple weather warnings

Scotland will be battered by 'heavy' snow and ice as the Met office issue multiple weather warnings.

Scots are bracing for harsh conditions as temperatures plummet as the latest ‘ Beast from the East ’ strikes across the country.

Experts are predicting frost and rain as several yellow alerts have now been put in place from 3pm today till 9pm on Thursday.

Forecasters also warned of 'cause significant disruption' as rural communities could be left 'cut off' which as well as power cuts across the country.

Scots are being urged to prepare in advanced for the brutal conditions by clearing paths and avoiding travel.

Forecaster Jim Dale from British Weather Services said current weather charts and conditions indicate the UK is “on the cusp” of another severe cold front.

He said: “There are signs that we could well go into another wintry spell, roughly from about the 20/21st of January onwards into February and that could actually bring another spell of seasonable weather or more than that.”

He said the issues will be caused by a predicts a milder ridge that will be in the mid-Atlantic and west of the UK and the cold air making its way in from the east.

The Met Office said: "There is a chance of a period of heavy snow across this region, should it occur it is likely to cause significant travel disruption.

"There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

"There is a slight chance that some rural communities, mainly those at higher elevations, could become cut off.

"There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected."
