Scotland and the 20 other nations that have failed to reach a major finals since 1998

We're all painfully aware of how bad Scotland's record in qualifying for major international tournaments is.

Even if Steve Clarke's side pull off a win in Serbia on Thursday, by the time the rescheduled Euro 2020 begins it will have been 23 years since we last kicked a ball in a major finals.

That puts Scotland in an exclusive club - but it's one Andy Robertson and co will be desperate to resign membership of.

Of the 55 full UEFA members there are only 21 who have failed to qualify for a major tournament since 1998.

The likes of Latvia, Slovenia and Northern Ireland have all been to at least one finals since then, despite their small populations.

The list of Scotland's peers doesn't make for good reading - and is arguably even worse when you consider some of the specifics.

North Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo weren't even independent nations back when we last made it, while Gibraltar were only accepted into UEFA in 2013.

That leaves the likes of Andorra, San Marino and Moldova which, with all due respect, is not the kind of company Scotland would like to be keeping.
