Scotland and Motherwell star Declan Gallagher wins army of new fans and lands Virgil van Dijk comparison

Declan Gallagher has won a new army of fans among the Tartan Army after his defensive display in Scotland's triumph over Serbia last night.

The Motherwell skipper was a colossus at the back for Steve Clarke's men as they ended 22 years of hurt to book our place at next summer's European Championships.

That's now six caps and six wins for the centre-back and last night's momentous moment in Belgrade has maintained his sensational record of having won every game he's played for Scotland.

The former Celtic youth, who enjoyed spells at Clyde, Livingston, Stranraer and Dundee before his big move to Fir Park, caught the attention of many last night as he kept out Fulham striker Aleksander Mitrovic and won countless balls in the air.

And fans on social media have heaped praise on the 29-year-old, with some even won over by his performances in the dark blue.

@Ma_rk76 tweeted: "Now I've returned (sort of) from cloud nine I just give a special shout out to Declan Gallagher. That was a performance McLeish, Miller, Hansen etc would have been proud of. Shaping up to be the best centre half Scotland have produced in a long time."

@johnvincentkane said: "Declan Gallagher, unbelievable, only realised Mitrovic was playing when he missed his penalty."

@darylbhoy posted: "Quite incredible the rise of Declan Gallagher. Though he was immense last night!"

@RhysYeoman4 said: "Declan Gallagher is f****** solid tell you that."

@PedzKeenan commented: "Fully expect Motherwell to be fielding bids in the region of £100m for Declan Gallagher after last night. 6 caps. Never lost a game."

@jasonforry1 tweeted: "Declan Gallagher > Vigil van Dijk"

And @roskorfc conceded: "Btw Declan Gallagher proved me wrong. I would never have started him and never thought he would play as well as that. He was excellent."

@ian_manPTFC quipped: "Declan Gallagher doesn't read books. He simply stares them down until they give him the information he wants."

Gallagher made his Scotland debut in November 2019 in a 2-1 win away to Cyprus and has followed that up with a 3-1 at home to Kazakhstan that same month, a penalty shootout win over Israel at Hampden in last month's play-off semi-final and 1-0 home wins over Slovakia and Czech Republic a few weeks ago.

That was followed by last night's penalty triumph in Serbia and Gallagher has kept clean sheets in three of his six outings.

He could win his seventh cap on Sunday afternoon when Scotland play Slovakia in Trnava.
