Scotland and Motherwell's Stephen O'Donnell praised after breaking 87-year club record

Stephen O'Donnell has been praised for another outstanding Scotland performance after breaking a long-standing record at club side Motherwell.

The 29-year-old, who hails from Wishaw, won his 24th cap for his country in the 2-0 win over Denmark and that was his 13th while attached to the Steelmen.

And his cap tally has now surpassed that of Motherwell's Hall of Famer George Stevenson, whom he pulled level with on 12 caps last month after an outing against Austria.

Stevenson racked up his 12 caps during the 1920s and 1930s, earning his final cap as a 'Well player in 1934.

However, O'Donnell has accrued his record-breaking tally in double quick time. His first outing as a 'Well player came in October last year against Israel in a 0-0 draw at Hampden.

Caps then followed against Slovakia, Czech Republic, Serbia, Israel, Austria, Israel, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, England, Croatia, Austria and now Denmark.

O'Donnell is now out on his own for Motherwell and earned his place in the history books after playing the full 90 minutes at Hampden. His previous 11 caps were earned while on the books at Kilmarnock.

It was another fine display in Dark Blue to boot, as he kept a clean sheet against the Group F winners, and social media was full of praise for the Steelmen's skipper.

The club's chief executive Alan Burrows tweeted: "Huge congratulations to Stephen, not only on his performance tonight, but for breaking such a long-standing record with Motherwell. An outstanding achievement."

Derek Watson simply posted: "World class tonight."

ArtW13 commented: "Played a blinder, ran his socks off & deserves as much credit for this victory & our success as anyone."

Hugh McGhee said: "Delighted for him. Outstanding pro who deserves all the accolades he gets tonight."

O'Donnell has helped Scotland secure a World Cup play-off spot in March next year and could have the chance to increase his tally in the months to come.
